Things to do
WALKS: There are beautiful walks from the door and OS maps provided.
SEASIDE: Southwold is the nearest seaside town and worth a visit, though it does get extremely busy in the holidays. If you don’t have a car, you can catch a bus there.
COVEHITHE is the best local sandy beach, there is also the impressive ruins of an old Abbey, along with the current parish church built within the ruins.
FAMILY FUN at Eastern Farm Park near Woodbridge (30 min drive), the Camel Park Oasis (15 min), the BeWILDerwood (55 min) or a nearby airplane museum (15 min).
OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES at High Lodge IP17 3QT (10 min) includes archery, clay pigeon, footgolf.
SHOPS AND FUEL: Excellent Co-op supermarket in Halesworth (5 min), turn off the A144 roundabout as signposted in Halesworth.
You can get online groceries delivered to the farm. The address is New Chapel Farm, Mells, IP19 9DE.
HALESWORTH: High street has a couple of nice cafes (we recommend the Focus organic deli/ café/ craft place although it is a bit expensive), an amazing hardware store (Coopers, our favourite shop in Suffolk), charity shops, a Christian bookshop (up near the church) and other delights.
EATING OUT: We have tried and would recommend the Queens Head at Blyford and the Queens Head at Bramfield, and the Star Inn (Wenhaston). There are many restaurants and cafes in Southwold. For fish and chips we recommend the Sole Bay Fish company Little Fish shop on the high street or Mrs T’s (aptly named!) in Blackshore Harbour. Please let us know if you find other good places.
BOAT HIRE: In the Beccles area you can hire a boat on the Suffolk Broads. CC Marine boat for 8 people is £19/hour 01502 713 703. Waveney River Centre – 0.5 or 1 day for 6 people, boats have a little kitchen and toilet; bigger boats also available. Hippersons Boatyard 01502 712166.
